Director of Training and Education
Role and Responsibilities
As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Training and Education is charged with the overall leadership, operational and programmatic responsibility of the ATSSA training and education department. Under the general direction of the Vice President of Education and Technical Services, the Director of Training and Education ensures ATSSA is recognized and respected as the number one source for training and education in the roadway safety industry. This position ensures programmatic and revenue growth, a first-in-class experience for customers, industry partners and stakeholders, and ensures a collaborative high-performing team culture.
Leadership
- Develops and executes relevant and effective strategies to ensure ATSSA is recognized and respected as the number one source for training and education in the roadway safety industry
- Provides leadership and mentorship to department staff; provides coaching to ensure individual and group strengths are maximized; develop and maintain a service-oriented culture of
- accountability and proactive collaboration; ensures appropriate flow of information intra and inter-departmentally; ensures positive on-boarding experience that provides clear and meaningful training and resources
- Serves as respected leader representing ATSSA within the industry regarding training and education; creates and maintains industry network to solidify ATSSA's position in the industry and provide avenues for growth; engages with industry groups and develops dialogue that moves forward ATSSA initiatives
- Determines and executes on value proposition for ATSSA training and education for current and potential customers and industry partners
- Provides high level programmatic and operations leadership for department including industry relations, course management, course development and general research and development initiatives; maintains relevant practical knowledge of training business practices and trends
- Develops and implements training and education business policies and ensures communication, staff training and adherence to policies
- Serves on the internal leadership team with the goal of ensuring effective, positive leadership, culture and communication throughout the association
- Other duties as assigned that drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the association.
Department Operations
- Develops and executes department budget and forecast changes to meet revenue and expense targets; fosters a deep understanding of department financials and conducts analysis to ensure metrics are met and proactive measures are taken to ensure accurate financials that meet established targets
- Conducts timely, relevant and meaningful performance management activities for department staff and ensures the same for all indirect reports; understands the current state of performance and take proactive measures to recognize and/or correct performance outcomes
- Reviews, understands and implements department workflows to ensure efficient and effective operations and activities with a focus on best use of resources and the end user experience
- In collaboration with marketing and communications team, ensures effective marketing strategy and campaigns are executed; provides meaningful content for communications
- Reviews, executes and maintains primary department contracts; ensures recurring review and adherence to contracts; has a firm understanding of all department contracts in place; manages department requests for proposal and ensure policy is followed
- In collaboration with intra and interdepartmental staff, ensures the end-user experience of ATSSA training and education customers, partners and stakeholders is positive, ensuring ATSSA is "easy to work with"; ensures a first-in-class customer service experience; conducts activities to survey and understand the current and desired customer, partner and stakeholder experience and implements improvements
Program and Project Management
- In collaboration with department staff and other stakeholders; conducts review, analysis and feasibility studies for ATSSA offerings, programs and projects
- Provides oversight of course development activities; ensures course development team has necessary resources and meets deliverables and deadlines
- Provides oversight of course and product management metrics and activities; makes course schedule decisions based on analysis; ensures consistent operations for all courses
- Provides oversight of industry relations activities ensuring proper business growth, outreach and positioning in the market; conducts research as necessary to grow market share and partnership opportunities
- Manages and conducts activities relevant to the Certification Board; develops and manages activities related to accreditation or other activities ensuring the quality and relevance of ATSSA training
- Serves as a staff manager to ATSSA committees as needed
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Education & Experience - A bachelor's degree in adult education, business administration or related field and a minimum of ten years of relevant leadership experience overseeing training business portfolios, however a combination of education and substantial relevant experience may be accepted. Proven experience growing a segment of business, developing and delivering first-in-class training and experience; and developing and leading a high-performing team in person and remotely; experience effectively developing and managing a budget of $7M+.
Skills and Knowledge - Entrepreneurial approach; effective at analyzing and improving service levels across a portfolio of business; effective oral, written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills; knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional design; knowledge of general business development and management practices; effective at internal and external change management; knowledge of and ability to use technology platforms (MS Suite, AMS, LMS, etc.); flexibility and ability to adapt to change quickly; knowledgeable on existing and emerging training techniques as they apply to adult education; ability to oversee multiple functional areas to successful outcomes; ability to lead, coach and manage an in-person and remote staff and ability to produce accurate budget and forecast changes.
Preferred Skills & Other
Preferred Skills - Experience working with certification boards and a strong understanding of certification criteria.
Organizational Relationships - Reports to the vice president of education, technical services; direct management of associate director of industry relations, associate director of training operations and associate director of course development; indirect management of all training and education department staff.
