Position Summary:

Basham & Scott LLC is hiring a Maine litigation attorney to join our team. This candidate must reside in Maine and hold an active license to practice in the state. This is a remote work from home position that is responsible for providing effective and thorough case evaluation, predominately for vehicle damage claims involving negligence and/or breach of contract, on behalf of rental car companies, and insurance subrogation cases. The Associate Attorney will predominately work a docket of cases in pre-trial and active litigation. The ideal candidate should be able to work autonomously with limited supervision, be comfortable managing a high-volume caseload, and have the ability to work a case from acceptance through to trial/settlement. Excellent organization and time-management skills are necessary in order to meet strict court deadlines. A J.D. from an accredited law school is required, as well as being active and in good standing in the state of Maine.


Key Outcomes:

1. Evaluate and appear for high volume case files to determine liability and recoverability.

2. Interface with insurance adjusters, opposing counsel, local counsel, and pro bono defendants on assigned cases in a manner that promotes the firm's values and demonstrates respect for others.

3. Partners with peers staff to acquire the necessary data/research support

4. Provides direction to assigned support personnel (Legal Assistant) to ensure thorough, timely case preparation, workflow, and performance reviews.

5. Ensures cases are properly prepared for trial by:

a. Effectively managing case and trial calendar to ensure deadlines are met.

b. Conducting legally sound research for liability and recovery potential

c. Producing correspondence, lawsuits, discovery, affidavits, and orders

d. Preparing corporate and expert witnesses for trial

e. Verifying data

6. Collaborates with other parties involved including but not limited to: insurance adjusters, opposing counsel, local counsel client representatives, witnesses, court personnel, and pro bono defendants.

Education/Experience:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
- Admitted to practice law in the state where the position is located
- Minimum of 3 years of experience practicing law, with a focus on civil litigation
- Strong knowledge of legal principles, procedures, and practices related to litigation
- Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- Proficiency in using legal research tools such as Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis
- Ability to analyze complex legal issues and develop effective strategies
- Strong negotiation skills to achieve favorable outcomes for clients
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Salary: Negotiable- Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
