Facility Specialist, Landscaper

Description
The Facility Specialist, Landscaper assists in the performance of a variety of duties in maintaining facility grounds and performs a variety of technical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Examples of Duties
Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Assists with a variety of grounds maintenance duties as needed; mow grass and pick-up trash; clean and service grounds keeping equipment and tools.
Mulches and cultivates the plantings for weed control and cosmetics purposes. 
Assists with the installation of new plantings around campus; prunes plants as required.
Transports, dispenses and applies pesticides and fertilizers according to label directions in correct amounts for desired results, and in accordance with local, State, and Federal laws and regulations.
Assists in the repair and maintenance of  the irrigation system.
Assists in clearing snow and ice; recommend supplies and equipment needed for improvement of grounds; assist with building set-up requests.

Marginal Functions:
Picks up and deliver supplies and materials.
Performs minor repairs to outside structures.
Cleans and maintains the maintenance buildings and storage areas; assist with the campus recycling.
Assists in the development and implementation of a comprehensive preventive maintenance program.
Participates in professional development activities and required employee training.
Performs special project work and other duties, as assigned.

This position description covers the most essential functions and duties associated with this position. The President or appropriate supervisory personnel may assign additional duties. Qualifications and Working Conditions
Knowledge of:
Basic principles and practices of insecticide and fertilization distribution.
Basic principles and procedures in maintaining simple grounds keeping hand tools.
Methods of operation of a variety of basic landscaping and grounds keeping tools and equipment.
Safe work practices.
Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
Basic principles and procedures of record keeping.
Basic knowledge of arithmetic, spelling, English and grammar.

Ability to:
Operate a variety of hand and power tools.
Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Follow all safety rules and regulations of the college.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.


Environmental Conditions: 

The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve outdoor environment with frequent exposure to the elements; working with machinery; exposure to dust, dirt and fumes; periodically working in confined or high places; and potential exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials. 

The employee must preserve environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.

 

Physical Conditions:

Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, lifting and carrying heavy materials, straight pulling, reaching above the shoulder, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and repeated bending, crawling and kneeling.

The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.

Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

 

Scheduling Conditions:

This is a full-time, position working 36 hours a week, generally Monday-Thursday, 7:00am - 3:30pm, and Friday 7:00am - 11:00am.  Availability for work on any Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute campus, or arranged off-campus site is required.

 

Traveling Conditions:

Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. Out of state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences.


 
Experience and Training
Experience:
One year of full-time grounds keeping and/or landscaping experience required.

Training:
High school diploma or GED required.

License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid license and/or certification to dispense pesticides and herbicides.
