Position Summary: The GIS Spatial Analyst/Project Coordinator will be a member of the GIS team, working on land cover mapping and spatial analysis around ecosystem services benefiting green infrastructure. The position will be involved with all aspects of GIC’s projects from planning to production. Much of the workload (20%) will be involved with coordinating project schedules and organizing deliverables. The remining time will evolve around GIS analysis following GIC’s defined GIS methods.

This position is an exceptional opportunity for a developing GIS analyst with strong interest in building hands-on experience with all aspects of geospatial analysis around Green Infrastructure and associated benefits. The position requires a broad range of experience and interest in the GIS project cycle and is a great experience builder for Conservation GIS Analysts interested in playing a key role as part of GIC’s growing team.

Technical Skills: This position requires advanced geospatial skills. Applicants will perform analysis to support green infrastructure planning, which includes but is not limited to: land cover mapping, environmental analysis, socioeconomic analysis, habitat suitability modeling and ecosystem services’ analysis. Technical qualifications also include experience with (or interest in) project management software (such as Asana), along with proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, and specifically model builder.

This position requires a well-rounded GIS analyst who can move from concept to analysis to graphical illustration and map production. They will follow implementable and repeatable (automated) workflows and templates and also use existing and create new workflows/automated tools using Model Builder and Python Scripts. Applicant must have experience in remote sensing, ArcGIS Pro (specifically model builder or python tools) and ArcGIS Online/Apps. Graphic representation will be large part of this position, including cartography, tables & charts and using online apps. Aesthetic and concise representation for reporting large amounts of data will be important.

Position Responsibilities: As part of team, the position will be responsible for:

  1. Project Coordination/Support: Work with GIC project managers and community planners to coordinate deadlines and manage project schedules. Print and mail hardcopy materials and basic management of GIS office computers.
  2. Data Consolidation and Production: The analyst will work on the GIS team on mapping several cities using remote sensing analysis and high-resolution imagery. The Coordinator/Spatial analysist will be involved with processing and collecting best available data from national and local sources.
    • Data Representation: Expected to follow (and refine/standardize) existing templates for reporting outputs, including poster maps, report maps, PowerPoint maps, charts and tables and all spatial and tabular information along with developing new and innovative ways to represent GIC’s products.
  3. Configuration and management of hardware/software needs in the office: ArcGIS license management and plotter production maintenance and coordination with staff requests for technical support on office system maintenance to meet GIS needs and data storage.
  4. Team Coordination: work with staff scientists, designers and planners and the rest of the GIS team to meet deadlines and project goals.
  5. Land Cover Analysis and Modeling: Conduct analysis of land cover data using GIC’s existing tools and processes to produce and develop standard spatial and ecosystem service measures and projections. GIC’s current method follows an ArcGIS pro model builder toolbox and position will be expected to learn, use, and collaborate with the team on improving both method and tools.

Degrees and Experience: Bachelor or master’s degree in Geography, Forestry or Natural Resources Management experience is desired, but not required.

 Communications: Communication and collaboration skills with both GIC staff and clients and partners are required.

Logistical: Position is for a local person who can report to the Charlottesville office at 414 E. Water Street, at least 75% of time to handle printing maps, managing office hardware and mailing deliverables.  Office located just steps from the Downtown Mall’s entertainment and shopping district with abundant cafes and leisure activities.

 

Compensation: Dependent on skills and experience, the salary range is $67,000 to $72,000. Flex hours are allowed (e.g. working more hours one week and less the next), along with health care plan reimbursement, 14 hours of leave accrued per month, plus leave for 6 major federal holidays. Participation in retirement plan following one year of employment with employer matching contributions up to 3% of annual salary.

 Supervisor: This position reports to the GIC’s Executive Director and GIS Manager.

Start Date: This position is intended to begin as soon as possible, ideally by June 1, 2024.
