The University Director of Sponsored Research holds a pivotal role in the promotion of faculty research, scholarship and programmatic funding initiatives in advancing its research mission as well as the integration of that mission with the larger strategic goals of the University. We are seeking an individual who can continue growth in the University’s research portfolio, and provide leadership in identifying funding opportunities and securing funding to support faculty research and student success. The individual would also effectively oversee and implement research compliance and protection programs (e.g., IRB, IACUC, responsible conduct of research), advise on institutional research infrastructure, and continue to move Pace forward as a competitive institution with respect to research and scholarship.

The University Director of Sponsored Research reports to the Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Position Duties

  • Foster and develop research, scholarship, and creative activities at Pace.
  • Create and support opportunities for interdisciplinary research and cross-department collaboration.
  • Identify and facilitate funding opportunities to support student success (e.g., training grants, federal scholarship programs).
  • Advise, as needed, on research infrastructure for the University.
  • Establish and cultivate relationships with local, state and federal agencies (NSF, NIH, DoE, etc.), to identify possible funding streams and opportunities for faculty and other researchers. Coordinate with Corporate and Foundation Relations in the office of Development and Alumni Relations for research support from private foundations.
  • Communicate the state of the research enterprise internally and coordinate with University Relations for broad external dissemination.
  • Define and advocate for the resources necessary to maintain and grow the research enterprise.
  • Serve on the PhD Advisory Committee and support graduate student research, scholarship and training.
  • Identify, facilitate, and support grant submissions for the University.
  • Inform faculty and staff of grant opportunities via workshops, meetings and announcements.
  • Oversee the application process to ensure the timely submission of compliant proposals, and provide feedback and guidance on applications to investigators.
  • Approve and submit external funding requests as the Authorized Organizational Representative/Grants signatory, and oversee the internal grant approval process.
  • Gather reliable trend data on grant funding and proposal submissions for Pace and its respective Colleges/Schools.
  • Identify opportunities outside of traditional outlets in collaboration with Development and Public Affairs.
  • Communicate with other institutions’ comparable offices to facilitate collaborative proposal submissions and sub-awards.
  • Coordinate with Grants/Finance and the budget representatives from the Colleges/Schools to seamlessly transition funded grants to the post-award stage.
  • Oversee the research protections program for the University.
  • Serve as the Institutional Official for the IACUC and IRB committees.
  • Implement best practices and monitor policy changes relevant to Pace’s IRB and IACUC.
  • Serve as the Research Integrity Officer for the University, and implement the University policy on research misconduct; Oversee research ethics and integrity, safety and compliance, including data security, human subjects, animal studies, select agents, conflict of interest, and the responsible conduct of research.
  • Leadership, Research, and Service.
  • Set and expect clear standards of performance for the Office of Sponsored Research staff.
  • Conduct meaningful performance reviews and set goals that hold staff accountable for their performance.
  • Serve on the Pace Management Council and Expanded Core groups.
  • Continue to conduct and produce their own research/scholarship, contribute to their professional communities, and stay current on trends in their field.
  • Serve on various University committees as an advocate for research, and participate in University-wide events and ceremonies (e.g., commencement, convocation).
  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.     

Position Qualifications

  • An earned terminal degree from an accredited institution.
  • Knowledge and expertise in university research.
  • 10 or more years of progressive experience in sponsored research and 10 or more years of successful higher education administrative experience.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and an open, collegial, tactful, and effective communication style.
  • Excellent organizational skills.


Work Hours

Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM with additional hours as needed.
