GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Publisher/CRO Location: Western PA
Summary: The Publisher/CRO is committed to highly localized journalism through service in the community and sound, hands-on leadership of the newspaper’s management team and staff.
The publisher has primary leadership responsibility for industry growth and operations with a focus on sales, marketing and financial management, a strong appreciation for journalistic standards and a healthy workplace culture. Our ideal candidate will have at least five years of publishing experience and will be a positive, self-motivated, detail-oriented leader who will continually develop the skills of the team.
The candidate will display the ability to maintain a high level of productivity and quality, leading by example. He or she will work well independently and as part of a team; communicate regularly; balance multiple priorities; and insure that deadlines are met in a fast-paced environment.
Maintaining and growing top line revenue must always be a primary focus: Traditional print advertising, digital, niche and circulation. To this end, the candidate will have a proven record of creativity, goal-setting and leading a positive, respectful and energetic sales culture. The publisher will foster support of this culture with all staff, with the understanding that achieving our revenue goals has a direct impact on all departments and our ability to do good work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
• Oversee all newspaper operations with a focus on culture, sales, marketing, financial management, and lively, hyper-local journalism.
• Manage P&L to ensure financial growth with ultimate responsibility for the financial health of the operation including but not limited to creating and managing the overall forecast.
• Enhance the newspaper’s positive presence in the community.
• Direct the online footprint for the newspaper and help guide our company toward an increasing digital presence.
• Ensure both advertiser and subscriber needs are met at high levels.
• Develop and execute strategies across multiple platforms to maximize sales.
• Implement effective operations through all departments to uphold the values of excellence and service.
• Lead process to recruit, evaluate and hire candidates, and manage disciplinary issues.
• Other duties and responsibilities typical of hands-on publisher will be expected as necessary.
Requirements:
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; and minimum of three years publishing experience
• A background in Advertising, Circulation or Editorial are strong plusses.
• Background in sales and experience leading advertising teams a very strong plus.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• The ability to lead and direct others to achieve or exceed organizational goals in an efficient and effective manner.
