The Department of Gender and Race Studies at The University of Alabama invites applications for a renewable contract assistant professor appointment specializing in Sociology to begin August, 2024. Candidates are expected to demonstrate expertise in the academic instruction and research of sociological theories of race, gender, class, and sexuality, and will teach four classes a semester, including Sociological Theory. We seek candidates whose sociological research and teaching addresses outcomes in specific environments and communities, such as prisons, schools, housing, the workplace, urban and rural populations, and immigrant and refugee populations. Preference will be given to candidates whose research interests include feminist and racial critiques of sociological methods; approaches to issues of race and gender in medical, psychological, or prison history; biological and/or medical anthropology; digital technologies, including mapping technologies and DH tools; the impact of new health technologies on marginalized populations; the challenges or opportunities for social justice offered by digital environments; reproductive justice; approaches to environmental sustainability and environmental justice; or pollution studies. Candidates must have a PhD in Sociology or related discipline by August 2024.
This is a department where faculty teach and conduct research in their respective field of expertise within the disciplines of Women's Studies, African American Studies and Sociology. The Department of Gender and Race Studies was formed in 2009 out of the two programs of study: Women's Studies and African American Studies, each of which had been at the University of Alabama for more than forty years. Offering an undergraduate major in African American Studies and minors in African American Studies, Women's Studies, and Sociology, the Department fulfills an important academic mission for the University and has more than 8000 students take classes in its courses and programs each year. The Department houses the Sociology minor program, which has more than 150 minors, and offers classes in Sociology to more than 1500 students a semester. The MA in Women's Studies is a research program from which graduates go on to attend top-tier PhD programs and law schools around the country, as well as work in the not-for-profit sector throughout the region in fields related to Gender and Race Studies.
The normal teaching load for this position is four courses a semester, and the contract is for three years and renewable. Salary and benefits are competitive. This is not a tenure-earning position: the expectation is that the person hired will fulfill the research, teaching, and service requirements for a renewable contract assistant professor. A completed PhD before Fall 2024 is a requirement for employment. The appointment will begin August 16, 2024.
