Job Summary
Drs. Joe Chappell ( http://pharmscience.createuky.net/chappell-lab/ ) and Chang-Guo Zhan ( https://pharmacy.uky.edu/people/chang-guo-zhan) are recruiting for a very exciting and innovative project.
We will be using Dr. Zhan's molecular modeling and dynamics simulation expertise to evolve catalytic specificities into terpene biosynthetic enzymes. The University of Kentucky team will consist of 2 postdocs that will work together on the computational and biochemical components. We have already recruited an outstanding computation scientist from a leading laboratory outside the U.S. and now wish to complement that with a Ph.D. having good molecular biology and biochemical skills.
The incumbent will be part of a larger team including the University of Wisconsin ( https://pflegerlab.che.wisc.edu) and LanzaTech ( www.lanzatech.com – a well-established Synthetic Biology company) to install new biosynthetic capabilities in microbes that can grow on unusual carbon sources at the largest scales of fermentation imaginable. The work will involve generating genetic mutations in terpene synthase genes, followed by in vivo and in vitro chemical profiling of the mutants expressed in E. coli.
The incumbent will be paid according to their experience.
This publication ( https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/bi501264s#) illustrates our previous approach and helps establish the challenge ahead.
