Description
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time tenure or clinical track faculty position in small animal surgery. Depending on qualifications and experience, the position is at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level.
The successful candidate is expected to engage in the departmental mission by participating in the teaching, service, and scholarship programs of the College. Responsibilities include clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of small animal surgery to professional students, interns, and residents; presenting continuing education lectures at the local and national levels; providing mentorship to residents within the surgical program; and contributing to the clinical research program.
Faculty within the small animal surgery section currently include three ACVS board-certified surgeons; one ECVS board-certified surgeon; one ACVS residency-trained surgeon; four surgery residents; three neurosurgeons (DACVIM-Neurology); three neurology residents; two sports medicine specialists (DACVSMR); one sports medicine resident; three ophthalmologists (DACVO); two ophthalmology residents; and one dentist (DACVD). Current equipment available for use in soft tissue surgery includes an endoscopic tower, LigaSure device, ultrasonic aspirator, and continually updated equipment for thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. Equipment and operating space are also available for interventional radiology techniques, which are currently performed at the University of Tennessee.
The Small Animal Clinic is a modern facility equipped to provide state-of-the-art surgical and medical service, teaching, and research. The facilities and equipment of the Small Animal Clinic support 24 specialties and include surgical and therapeutic lasers, 40 slice computed tomography unit, 1.5 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, intraoperative fluoroscopy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, arthroscopy, and DEXA scanning. Also available to the surgery clinic are a fully developed nutrition service, a regenerative medicine laboratory, four emergency and critical care specialists, an Instron materials testing machine, and an on-site 3D modeling and printing laboratory. The hospital has a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility with 3 underwater treadmills, a therapeutic exercise pool, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, many wound management modalities, and a fully equipped gait analysis laboratory with kinetic and kinematic testing capability.
The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine boasts a collegial environment committed to mentoring new faculty to be successful in their academic career. This includes a Master Teaching Program, which provides resources, programs and leadership to support the highest quality of professionalism and instruction within the various educational missions of the college, and a Veterinary Social Work program that provides training and support in the areas of communication and conflict management, compassion fatigue, animal-related grief and bereavement, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. Qualifications
Requirements include the DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and completion of an ACVS or ECVS residency in small animal surgery.
