Youth Education is seeking a passionate individual to join the team as a PATHS Summer Counselor. The PATHS Program prepares prospective first-generation students from under-resourced communities to achieve their full potential in high school and beyond. You will work with groups of students from diverse backgrounds in the Salt Lake Valley as they explore the University of Utah's campus and higher education opportunities. Join us this summer and be part of a fun, dynamic team that enriches the lives of high school students.
PATHS Counselors will work with three cohorts of 25 students in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade for a week-long day camp and a residential camp at the University of Utah. On campus, they can gain academic and life skills, practice self-advocacy, and build a lasting learning community.

PATHS Camp Counselors are critical to the program and the success of our students. Counselors are leaders, mentors, educators, and advocates for PATHS students and others. They supervise youth during all the activities and overnight camps, teach and lead camp activities, develop and coordinate lessons, and act as positive role models.
Responsibilities
1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of students during activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended outcomes

Responsibilities
1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of students during activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended outcomes
- Assures students are properly supervised at all times
- Apply basic youth development principles such as relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth while working with campers
- Be aware of and enforce safety guidelines
- Plan and prepare elective lessons or activities to engage students as needed
- Lead and teach camp electives and activities
- Actively participate in all program areas as assigned
- Provide appropriate activities for individual and group interests and abilities
- Provide care for each student within your supervision, including recognition of one's own personal health needs
- Be alert to students and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with camp director when appropriate
- Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure proper utilization, care, and maintenance is adhered to; report necessary repairs promptly to camp director
- Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures
- Set a good example for students and others including cleanliness, punctuality, personal language, appearance, health habits, sportsmanship, and manners
- Provide participant guardians appropriate feedback and information as needed for their students to have a successful camp experience
- Follow safety and security protocols when students are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp
- Supervise students after classes have ended. Maintain a safe environment in the dorms and ensure students are following curfew hours
- One year of previous experience as a group counselor or staff member in a camp or other youth program
- Be physically able to accompany the students to any of the camp activities
- Be able to communicate verbally with students and provide instructions
- Have visual ability to recognize hazards in the camp setting as well as physical symptoms of student injury or illness
- Have auditory ability to respond appropriately to hazards and any student concerns
- Be able to observe student behavior in daily life, to respond verbally to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior
- Current CPR and first-aid certificate (this training will be provided)
- Valid driver's license
- Must be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate or equivalent
- At least 21 years old or older
- Majors in human development, education, social work, psychology, or other related fields
- Desire and ability to work with junior high and high school students outdoors and in the classroom
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance
- Ability to assist in or teach an activity
- Good character, integrity, relatability, and adaptability
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
- Experience working with children in grades K-12 as a leader or assistant leader
- Respect for diversity and enthusiasm to work will culturally diverse students from underrepresented backgrounds
- Fluent in Spanish
