Job Summary

The Center for Campus Wellness ( CCW) is a confidential and comprehensive wellness office that provides wellness education, trainings and workshops; victim-survivor advocacy services and support; safer sex services for students; collegiate recovery program, and student involvement opportunities.

We are hiring student staff who will serve as Peer Wellness Navigators ( PWN) with our team. As a Peer Wellness Navigator, you will play a crucial role in promoting the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of students attending the University of Utah. This position is designed for current college students who are empathetic, compassionate, and dedicated to supporting their peers through the various challenges that can arise during the college experience. Peer Wellness Navigators will assist CCW staff to plan, implement, and evaluate wellness navigation programs in addition to working one-on-one with students.

Scheduling Expectations-
  • August 19th, 2024 – April 22, 2025 (regular PWN schedule): Beginning August 19th (first day of fall semester) through April 22nd (Reading Day of spring semester), PWNs are expected to work 10 hours per week, primarily during regular business hours. Some evening hours may be approved as hosted programs are scheduled or for remote work on projects. Shift schedules are flexible to accommodate student class schedules.
  • PWNs will not be required to work during academic breaks (fall, winter, spring), University closure days or holidays when Student Affairs is closed, or during finals week for the fall or spring semester.
Mandatory Training (Paid)
  • Up to 15 hours of online, self-paced summer training to complete between June 1st and August 15th.
  • Mandatory in-person training will be held on August 15th and 16th. Times TBD but will not exceed 12 hours of training.

Responsibilities

All PWNs will share a set of core responsibilities, including:
  1. Peer Support: Provide non-judgmental, empathetic, and confidential peer support to college students experiencing challenges through one-on-one meetings and follow up.
  2. Resource Navigation: Assist students in navigating the university's wellness resources, including counseling services, support groups, and other programs. Provide information on available wellness resources both on and off-campus as appropriate.
  3. Workshops and Outreach: Organize and participate in wellness workshops, presentations, and outreach events to raise awareness about mental health issues and campus resources.
  4. Peer Education: Deliver educational sessions on topics such as stress management, time management, healthy relationships, and other wellness-related subjects.
  5. Crisis Intervention: Recognize signs of crisis or emergency situations and provide immediate support, including referring students to appropriate professionals or services when necessary.
  6. Maintain Confidentiality: Ensure strict confidentiality and ethical standards are maintained when interacting with students, respecting their privacy at all times.
  7. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of interactions with students and provide reports to supervisors as needed.
  8. Professional Development: Attend regular training sessions and meetings to stay updated on wellness trends, resources, and best practices.
  9. Collaboration: Collaborate with other campus organizations, student groups, and university staff to foster a supportive campus environment.
Minimum Qualifications

Must be a University of Utah student.

  • Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Utah in good academic standing (minimum 3.0 GPA).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Empathetic and non-judgmental attitude.
  • Knowledge of and passion for mental health and wellness topics.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Willingness to participate in training and professional development activities.
  • Organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in peer support, counseling, or related fields is a plus.
