Position General Duties:
The Research Institute for Social Equity (RISE), in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs invites applications for a Graduate Research Assistant. The L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs advances racial equity and social justice through multidisciplinary scholarship, research, training, and engagement. The goal of RISE is to be the national leader in advancing social justice to inform public policy, governance, and practice to improve conditions for marginalized voices within our society, including communities of color, LGBTQIA individuals, people with disabilities, incarcerated populations, survivors of domestic violence, and women.
This position assists with a variety of project functions and tasks to help deliver successful project outcomes. Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Provide administrative support to research activities which may include reviewing research materials in Microsoft Office, SPSS, nVivo, Access, Qualtrics, and/or RedCap.
- Conduct systematic literature reviews and searches to support data and analyses.
- Study recruitment and management.
- Data collection and entry.
- Conducting structured interviews and/or focus groups with participants.
- Building and managing surveys on electronic platforms such as Qualtrics and REDCap.
- Meet with research team regularly to maintain ongoing communication regarding the quality of the assistant's performance.
- Manuscript and report development and revisions (e.g., writing, reference/citation formatting).
- Conference presentations and abstracts.
- Performs other related duties as required.
This work happens in coordination with overall goals and objectives of RISE. This position may also perform functions on complex web-based and mail survey projects to include: literature search on topical or methodological issues, documentation of final instrument, cleaning and preparing data and documentation for transfer to clients, performing data analyses as assigned, preparing and participating in project briefings and training sessions, providing support when RISE responds to requests for proposals, and other duties as assigned. This position may work on multiple, diverse, research projects.
The employee understands that the continuation of this position depends on the availability of grant funding.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
Bachelor's degree in a social science and 2 years of research experiences or enrolled in a graduate program in an accredited university; experience with Microsoft Office Suite; strong written and verbal communication skills; knowledge of or prior work experience with basic research methodologies including literature review, research design, data collection, and writing technical research reports. Works well independently. Strong in meeting direct time constraints.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so at VCU.
Preferred Hiring Standards:
Master's degree in public administration, psychology, social science or related field; work experience in a university-based survey and/or evaluation research unit; experience with policy analysis, experience with the Microsoft Office Suite including database design in MS-Access; experience with IBM SPSS; experience with Qualtrics or the REDCap web-based survey package; strong written, verbal and presentation communication skills; direct work experience with advanced research methodologies, including study recruitment, research design, data collection, data management, presenting and writing conference abstracts,, and writing technical research reports. Works well independently. Strong in multi-tasking in a fast paced, non-hierarchical atmosphere and meeting direct time constraints.
